880 Pipes

Oakland-Pipes-201305-DSC04417

2013 marked the end of the Oakland pipes at 9th Street and Pine in West Oakland. If you live in the SF Bay Area and are an artist or street art follower you have already felt the loss. For those of you who are not familiar with the pipes, it was a playground for both writers and muralist for the past several years.

9th and Pine

In March, 2009 Caltrans awarded MCM Construction a contract to replace overpasses and ramps along the Interstate 880 corridor located between Hayward and Oakland. The project was scheduled for completion this year. It required gigantic round pipes that were to be submerged into the ground and filled with reinforced concrete to support the over head roadway. The pipes were stored on a several acre lot located a few miles down the freeway in West Oakland. On a need be basis they were hauled off to the construction site.

9th and Pine

Initially the existence of the yard was not well known but overtime it became open season attracting viewers and doers. The pipes were painted on the exterior and as time slipped by the interiors were painted as well including the giant crane that was used to lift them onto the trucks for their ride down the freeway. Empty spray cans littered the grounds and writing covered the freeway wall bordering one side of the lot. On any given day when we stopped by we might find the place empty or hear muted voices drifting from unknown directions since you could not see around the pipes. The locals who drive that freeway said it was quite a sight to see the painted pipes suspended over the freeway.

Some of the pipes are supporting this overpass at 5th Avenue in Oakland. If anything ever happens to the overpass it will be another anthropological moment for those who discover the pipes in the rubble.

As a last hurrah we posted many more photos not previously shared. Most of the photos were taken in 2013. Oakland Graffiti Pipes Enjoy!

Artists and Galleries with online shopping

Art Galleries and Online Stores

We have been contacted by viewers wanting to know where they can purchase art and other products by some of the artists they see on the street. We randomly compiled this short list that is a sampling of what is out there. In the process, we noticed the Big Cartel is a popular shop platform for artists. You can find other artists there who are not on this list. Some galleries like 1AMSF show art by graffiti writers and character artists (Bode, Vogue, Optimist, Jurne…) that you do not readily see on their sites so be specific in your inquires.

Oakland based artist Eddie Colla just curated and participated in a show at the Ian Ross Gallery called Made in China. The purpose of the show was to probe our underlying assumptions as a society to the originality, intellectual property and the value of art. He and the other artists who participated in the show created original pieces of art then shipped them to China for reproduction. The results were displayed side by side in the show.

The ironic twist is that shortly after the show opened he discovered that one of his most popular pieces “If you want to achieve greatness stop asking for permission” is being reproduced and sold on Walmart.com with Banksy as the listed artist. Now if you know anything about Eddie Colla then this occurrence takes on another dimension.

walmart screen shot 2

Eddie Colla, who is known for his wheat paste and stencil art, is no stranger to the corporate world. He spent the first 15 years of his career working as a photojournalist for the news and advertising industry. When he walked away from that career he left commercial exploitation behind and purposely approached his art career knowing what he stood for and the kind of statement he wanted to make with his art.

Artists leave art on the street for a myriad of reasons. For Eddie it is simply a matter of taking back the streets and saying we don’t have to put up with the unsolicited messages that daily barrage us. When asked about his street art that is covertly pasted up Eddie quips, “Some people view what I do as vandalism. I assume that their objection is that I alter the landscape without permission. Advertising perpetually alters our environment without the permission of its inhabitants. The only difference is that advertisers pay for the privilege to do so and I don’t. So if you’re going to call me anything, it is more accurate to call me a thief.”

Eddie Colla can bend your ear on his thoughts about commercialism and taking control over your own life and ideas. His art visually challenges the viewer to question their environment and thoughts on pressing social issues and to individually draw their own conclusions about how they think things ought to be.

EC-IMG_1145

Eddie Colla is not taking this affront lying down. He created a message using the very image that was stolen. Yesterday he gave himself permission and pasted it up on the streets and created a piece of art that is selling on 1xrun.com as a limited edition to help pay for legal fees to right this wrong with Walmart. If you go to that page you can read an interview that is specific to this issue.

You might also be interested in this checking out this site. Unbeknownst to Eddie, several passionate individuals involved Sumofus.org to ask the public to support him by writing into their website to demand that Walmart apologize to Eddie Colla and stop stealing and exploiting activist art.

More Information

Eddie Colla, an Oakland-based artist, created his well-known piece, “Ambition” in 2009. Depicting a female graffiti writer with a spray can, the piece reads, “If you want to achieve greatness, stop asking for permission.” But in November 2013, Colla discovered an exact replica of his work marketed as an art print on the Walmart website — without his permission or any sort of legal agreement.

A big box retailer copying an independent artist note-for-note was not the kind of audacious underdog story Colla envisioned in the work’s text. “I made a piece about individuals controlling their own fate and not making their success contingent on the approval of others,” said Colla. “It then gets adopted by a neo-feudal corporation like Walmart. A corporation whose employment practices have created a 2 million person underclass in this country.”

As Colla dug deeper, he discovered that Walmart was selling the mass-produced prints of his work through a wholesaler called Wayfair, who is marketing Colla’s work as a Banksy print through Amazon and Overstock.com in addition to Walmart’s website. Eddie Colla’s name was omitted entirely and his signature was taken off the piece. Friends who visited the Walmart website after they heard Colla’s story noticed the Colla knock-off showing up in their Facebook ads and Google ads on the various sites they visited when they subsequently surfed the net — presumably because of a cookie from the Wayfair website.

The idea of big box retailers like Walmart appropriating an anti-establishment art form, street art, to further their profits is all too ironic. The bastions of conservatism and propagators of the increasing wealth gap and declining middle class, companies like Walmart have an ideology pitted against the anti-authoritarian message of Colla’s “Ambition.” Colla chose to combat the unabashed theft of his work with parody — and, of course, an impending lawsuit. A new version of “Ambition” titled “It’s Only Stealing If You Get Caught” shows the same image with altered text: “Introducing the anti-establishment, left-wing subversive vandalism collection. Glorified vandalism available now at Walmart.”

The satirical new artwork — which recently was debuted on a San Francisco billboard on the intersection of Oak St. and Divisadero St. — points out that Walmart’s greed has no limits. Even a radical art form has the potential to be swallowed up by the behemoth machine of corporate capitalism.

Colla released a print of “It’s Only Stealing If You Get Caught” with 1XRun on earlier today, December 2, to raise awareness for his cause and gather funds for the hefty legal fees necessary to sue Walmart and Wayfair for the theft of his artwork. The print sold out within one hour, but it’s only a start.

Carve SF

photo-3-web-

Earlier this month Hub Strategy hosted Carve San Francisco, the first ever international sand sculpture competition held in the city of San Francisco. The event was held on the parking lot of Sports Basement in the Presidio. 400 tons of sand was delivered to the site where it was molded and sculpted into amazing works of art over a five day period by artists who were invited from around the world. Amongst the sculptors we met during this event were Jookeng Tan,Chris Guinto, Melineige Beauregard, Wilfred and Edith Stijger of the Netherlands and Lawrence Noble, Chairman of Academy of Art University’s Sculpture Department and famous for creating the ‘Yoda Fountain’ for George Lucas in the Presidio.

Carve-DSC07654

During the event visitors stopped by daily to watch the sand being prepared for carving and see the pieces emerge as the carvers used everyday looking implements. The day we dropped in the sculptures were at different stages in the process. Sand was being poured into large rectangular boxes with water layered on top. Carvers were in some of the boxes pounding down the dirt in a similar manner as Lucille Ball in the famous I love Lucy TV episode with the scene where she is stomping grapes in a large wine barrel.

Carve-DSC07655

There were other pieces where carvers were removing the wooden boxes to reveal sand blocks with surfaces they were smoothing to begin chiseling. Some sculptures were already well along where the piece had emerged and the artists were fine tuning them with a pile of wet sand at the base.

On the final three days while the carvers were still working on the pieces sponsor tents opened, Off the Grid food trucks appeared along with artists passionate about surfing, surf boards and art. There were activities to engage the people who came to the event including a $1 vote for their favorite sculpture that benefited the San Francisco Chapter of Surfrider Foundation and Sustainable Surf.

Bronzing the Silly Pink Bunny

Lower-Haight-DSC00210
The Silly Pink Bunny by Jeremy Fish that has graced the corner of Laguna and Haight in San Francisco for several years was demolished last week. The street art walls surrounding it will be removed as well to make way for a housing development that is already in progress.

All the wonderful art we enjoyed on this corner for the past few years was the result of the Haight Street Art Center working with the art community and UC Berkeley the owner of the site.

Due to the success of this project, the developer has agreed to work with the community for find a permanent home for a bronze bunny and the street art murals. The Haight Street Art Center has established a Kickstarter to raise $50,000 by November 2nd for this project. The Lower Haight Merchant and Neighborhood Association has already kicked in funds. They need your help to fully fund it.

Pallett Space

Wall-DSC06991

There is a new happening corner on San Pablo and 65th Street in Oakland. The building walls and fences were recently painted with fun colorful murals by several Oakland and visiting artists who brighten both our days on the street and the walls in our homes.  Some of their studio art can be seen in galleries around Oakland and in Pallett Space the occupant of the buildings and business that made all the art happen in partnership with LeQuiVive Gallery that is in downtown Oakland.

Purdey-DSC07011

The Pallet Space is a 2000 square foot art gallery opened earlier this year by artist owner Purdey. The space has been a work in process as he been creating  a retail/consignment space with antiques and collectables, an art gallery and performance and rehearsal space . He has some awesome plans of making this a destination in the neighborhood and East Bay for both private and public events indoors and out.

Memento Mori is not to be missed!

Photo-2IMG_0142

Bay Area artists Eddie Colla and D Young V have been very active on the street and showing their art independently and in collaboration in galleries in San Francisco, Oakland and other cities. They are known for their jarring wheat paste and painted images that are on the street today and gone tomorrow. They teamed up for an over the top street art installation titled Memento Mori at Art Works Downtown in San Rafael in Marin County.

Memento Mori, a Latin term for ‘remember death’, is an artistic symbol for remembering the inevitability of death, and is a continuing theme throughout Eddie Colla’s and D Young V’s work. The artists’ installations depict the end of the world juxtapose the rising up of a new world from ashes, and a future reduced to the tasks of survival and memory.

Photo-3IMG_0251

Each artist takes a different approach to remembrance. D Young V’s art has bold black and white graphics accented with made up topography and geometric patterns in blue and red color palettes.  His art is all meticulously drawn and painted. Eddie Colla takes a different approach with gritty predominately black and white images of people with powerful expressions frequently wearing masks and other protective garb.

Photo-1-IMG_0297

The show opened Friday, August 30, 2013 and runs through Friday, October 11, 2013 in the Art Works Downtown main gallery located at 1337 Fourth Street, San Rafael, CA, 94901. An opening reception will be held this Friday , September 13, 2013 from 5-8 p.m with a closing reception on October 11, 2013, from 5 p.m. to 8 p.m.

They will give a talk on September 21 in the gallery about the controversies surrounding street art.

Art Works Downtown is open to the public Tuesday through Saturday, 10 a.m. to 5 p.m.

Ghost Bike

bayAreaGhostBikes-op

There has been a noticeable uptick in bicyclists throughout the country as cities encourage residents to get out of their cars and use other methods of transportation to move around the cities. Bike lanes have been added, routes promoted and laws passed for the safety of all. Unfortunately there is a lot of congestion on the road as pedestrians; bicyclists and drivers all converge on the same space resulting in injuries and death. Each year, the US sees more than 600 bicyclist fatalities, and more than 50,000 bicyclists report injuries.

In May 2010 photographer Genea Barnes discovered Ghost Bikes while she was in New York for a shot. Their symbolic power affected her so profoundly that she began The Ghost Bike Project. According to Genea, Ghost bikes started in St Louis in 2003, by one artist who wanted to make a statement. He painted a number of bicycles all white and locked them to every intersection where a cyclist was killed. Since then, ghost bikes are seen around the world.

GhostBikeI4.RobertYegge-op

Genea Barnes began photographing the Ghost Bikes because one can pass a memorial hundreds of times and eventually forget that it is there to commemorate a human life. Some of her photographs are of just the Ghost Bikes and some are a combination of Ghost Bikes with images of live people, shot in her studio and manipulated through Photoshop to look like ghosts. The resulting images remind us to keep each other safe and represent a spirit that is no longer with us. Over time, many Ghost Bikes have been removed. Genea hopes this project will help the memorials and their sentiment live on. She has shot Ghost Bikes in over 45 cities and is in the process of creating a book.

Currently there are two ghost bikes in San Francisco. One at 3rd and King, across for AT&T park, for Diana Sullivan, and one at 6th and Folsom, for Amelie Le Moullac, killed just a few weeks ago.

GhostBikeK4.NicolasDjandji.BrooklynNY

She has an exhibit titled “Ghost Bike: A Photographic Journey” at the Dogpatch Cafe & Art Gallery September 1 – October 5, 2013. A white-painted bicycle leans, locked to a post a few feet away from the spot where a car struck and killed a bicyclist. Flowers decorate the abandoned bike, a visible reminder that life is fragile. This is a Ghost Bike, one of over 500 such memorials chained to fences, streetlights, and signposts across the United States.
